And it shouldn’t be an exceptionally big deal the first time. If we taught girls that every time they have After God Made Me He Said Tada, Funny Chicken T-Shirt they are owed respect and are entitled to set boundaries, say no, and have their own sexual desire, we’d be in a much better place. I’m not saying the first time you have sex isn’t a big deal (although we should recognise for some it isn’t) but rather the first time should be the first step in establishing a pattern for how every time should be, not privileging this as some special wonderful event only to happen once and to be regretted if bestowed unwisely. That’s not empowerment.
Thank you! I mean me and my family are atheists but I always thought sex was an intimate act between two people not the use of a hygiene product. Does this mean to them that because I had to have an internal ultrasound due to PCOS I’m no longer a virgin? I just can’t understand those kinds of religious people. I can understand why you’d wait to have sex but no tampons, gynaecological tests, or things like the hormonal IUD that can control your periods with a tiny fraction of the hormones of birth control until marriage? That’s ridiculous.

I am going to go out on a limb and say that OP may be in a country where there is still a lot of stigma on periods and a lot of After God Made Me He Said Tada, Funny Chicken T-Shirt about feminine hygiene. . The only reason I am saying this is because of OP’s misconception about tampons and swimming. You dont need a “sport” tampon to swim. Tampons were invented for active women so they wouldnt have to deal with the wrappers, pads, belts (at the time) and sanitary bags. Any tampon can be used during swimming or any other exercise. Pads, dont usually “float away” when worn with a properly fitted bathing suit….although they balloon up to 5 times their size in water and are uncomfortable. Honestly, she really doesnt need to use anything while swimming but again, there is still a lot of stigma about menstrual blood.
Youre NTA for giving your little sister a feminine hygiene product. But I worry about the environment you are both in. You AND your sister need science based education on reproductive health. A mother that talks about a girl being “ruined” by a tampon is not going to give sound advice about sex, birth control, or vaginal care. (Think about all of the mothers out there that still tell their daughters to douche, then spray on perfume, and dump baby powder in their panties.) More concerning, is how mommy might perceive more serious matters such as sexual assault and spousal rape.
