My native languages are English and French (my mother came from a I’m going to be real pissed if I get my shit together shirt my father taught French at school and so, while I was born and grew up in London, French was also a very active part of my life and, in the end, I studied French literature at university). I spent several years in Germany in military service and took every opportunity to learn German, become pretty good before I left. After a short spell back in England, I emigrated to the Netherlands. Consequently, I spoke excellent German but not a word of Dutch.

I won’t describe all the problems that got in the I’m going to be real pissed if I get my shit together shirt but, all in all, I think I got the general basics in about 6 months. After a year, I was what they call functional, I could lead a pretty normal life completely in Dutch. It will be a little easier if you do know German, you will just have to learn to keep the two languages separate or you will get confused. Let me give you some quick, off the cuff examples: ich/ik, ich bin/ik ben, er ist/hij is, strasse/straat, mensch/mens, versicherung/verzekering, wunsch/wens, madchen/meisje, suss/zoet. As you can see, some words are very similar, some very different. So, bottom line, not that hard. The German may help a bit, while it would probably slow down a native German speaker.
