I bought a expensive book for a class in which I really just needed the online version as it would Snoopy playing guitar ACDC rock band shirt great way to do quick look ups for my job, but you have to buy the book to get that. When I got the book I put the code in online and got the book. It had a 6 month expiration date. Wtf.One of the universities I went to had a system in place that if a new textbook cost more than $100, it would be put on permanent reserve in the library and could be checked out for in-library use.I had gone the cheap route and bought the international version of the textbooks I needed, and just photocopied the question sets, because the international version used none USD currencies. Otherwise the information was identical.

When I was teaching math at a university I told the students to get the Snoopy playing guitar ACDC rock band shirt used textbooks they could find on line. They did not need the latest edition especially in math which evolves far too slowly for there to be a text revision as often as a couple of decades. Administrators did not all like it but that’s just tough shit. My take home pay got smaller every year because rent during the work week and transportation kept going up till I was below minimum wage so I quit when my last car broke down. Adjunct jobs pay about the same as one student’ tuition for the course. With 30 students paying imagine how rich someone is getting. What is worse, the freshman math texts had probably paid advertising for junk food, sports teams, the latest pop music, and game show statistics. Universities pay sports coaches as much as one hundred times what they pay most PhD professors.Of course! Textbooks are the secret gambit of academia. I’m not surprised that in lieu of the coronavirus pandemic that they would use ebooks as a way to inflate their numbers. We all know textbooks are a sham too: most of them have identical chapters and even problem sets. The difference? They change slightly the answer key or page number, or chapter number, so that you can’t use a prior years text book and appropriately complete your homework assignment, despite the “9th” edition being 95-99% inline with the “8th.”Add to that professors don’t have time to grade answers and some overworked grad student or CV boosting coed is often too quickly grading homework means a well funded gambit ensues.I’m not promoting any regulation per sé, only that prior years text books be integrated into the curriculum and let textbook authors be incentivized to creat a new edition worth the money than some procrastinated late-night-term-paper-creative-writing-assignment clone.
