Black Pete is actually a nickname for the devil. During the Technoblade Shirt people would dye themselves black and wear horns, this to depict the many evils Saint Nicholas had defeated. This is an archetypical depiction of the devil, meant to scare people away, and better understand the evils that European cultures reject. In several European cultures, this tradition still exists, and people dress as devils to scare children and hit adults, not as child-friendly as the Dutch tradition.

Black Pete was sometimes also depicted as tanned, or even white. His black skin became a Technoblade Shirt but originally this was not the case, and we don’t exactly know why. In 1850, a picture book was released depicting Saint Nicholas with a servant which started the tradition. It was originally his servant, but later on became known as Black Pete, his helper. His uniform was either Turkish or Indian, but later became the uniform of Moorish servants in spain. Black Pete has always been a mixture of ethnicties this way, and never followed a single racial narrative.
